Good Bots, Bad Bots: Changing the Way We Approach Cybersecurity?

Wes has been covering games and hardware for more than 10 years, first at tech sites like The Wirecutter and Tested before joining the PC Gamer team in 2014. Wes plays a little bit of everything, but he’ll always jump at the chance to cover emulation and Japanese games. Halo has bots for the very first time, and their names are a surprise source of delight. Twitter will discuss the news further on a Twitter Space at 3 pm PT today hosted by the Twitter Safety team, which will be followed by a developer demo on TwitterDev’s Twitch channel on Thursday at 11 am PT. One of the more notable updates to the new policy is a change to the rules to better support non-commercial research. “We initially brainstormed this on a custom thing and thought, will we have control over it? Will it be good enough? What if people don’t use Messenger and they don’t want to download Messenger?” Javed says about Tarjimly.

SiliconANGLE Media is a recognized leader in digital media innovation serving innovative audiences and brands, bringing together cutting-edge technology, influential content, strategic insights and real-time audience engagement. These accounts represented a range of bot use, from critical updates to interesting information to fun content. Polestar said it made the bot “in light of a deteriorating environment when it comes to climate mis- and disinformation on social media platforms.” It’s not wrong; under Elon Musk, climate denialism is thriving on X in particular. Publishers usually have a small amount of traffic coming from search engine crawlers, like Googlebot.

These bots are necessary to properly index the content of a site for search engine results. So publishers usually want these bots to come to their pages, as long as the quantity is not that high. In the #FouAnalytics chart below, you can see the search engine bots in yellow — small quantities (around 1%). Depending on the site and the frequency with which content is updated, good bots like search crawlers will visit between 1 – 3% of the time. In other words, 1 – 3% of the pageviews may be from a search crawler.

I expected all of this going into Infinite’s technical test, but I didn’t expect the bot names to make me laugh out loud. The bad bots can range from the annoying — like bots that tweet spam (or promote cryptocurrency schemes!) — to the more worrisome, like bots that try to influence upcoming elections. As an opt-in system, bot owners trying to do good with their creations will be able to add labels and promote themselves as the person behind the account. Researchers have caught AI tools like ChatGPT serving up climate falsehoods.

There were none, for the simple reason stated above — bots don’t go to these publishers’ sites because these mainstream publishers were not paying for traffic. Again there were no bots hitting the non-existent pages on mainstream sites. Those webpage urls passed in the bid requests simply didn’t exist — a “404 error” if you tried to load the url in a browser. Seasoned ad fraud researchers know that there is naturally low bot traffic on good publishers’ sites because they DON’T buy traffic of any kind. Fraud bots are very practical and are not going to waste time going to sites that don’t pay them for the traffic. They will load pages on websites that pay them the traffic — i.e. the long tail sites that have few to no humans visiting.

  • With almost 50 percent of all online traffic made up of bots, and bots becoming increasingly complex in how they are used, we can expect to see more creative uses – both good and nefarious – moving forward.
  • When he’s not obsessively optimizing and re-optimizing a tangle of conveyor belts in Satisfactory (it’s really becoming a problem), he’s probably playing a 20-year-old Final Fantasy or some opaque ASCII roguelike.
  • Edgio’s Advanced Bot Manager works by leveraging massive amounts of data drawn from the company’s global deployment and then applies machine learning to detect bots based on both signature and behavioral fingerprinting.
  • It was even featured in a keynote at Facebook’s F8 conference in April as an example of the power bots can hold.

Besides, how would you get a bunch of humans to come to a specific set of sites in large quantities when you need them to? You just send one command to the botnet to visit a list of sites, a specific number of times. Waiting on humans to visit your site is not a reliable way to make money. As a marketer buying digital ads through programmatic channels, you need to understand what bot traffic goes to mainstream good publishers, and why.

Cheaper bots are almost always used for CPM and CPC fraud to maximize profitability; why use more expensive bots if you can already get away with it with cheaper, simpler ones? Only in certain cases does the cost-benefit analysis dictate that more advanced bots should be used. For example, in certain industry verticals where cost per clicks are very high — like banking, pharma, or legal — more advanced bots are needed because more advanced detection is being used. Bots made from malware on devices can record the real human’s usage (e.g. mouse movements, touches, clicks, scrolling speed) and play it back to fool detection.

For example, instead of loading the entire webpage with ads on it, they call just the ad units themselves, to save time and bandwidth. This is called “naked ad calls” 2 and it allows the bots to generate even more ad impressions per unit of time. Bots also flock to higher CPM forms of digital ads — like CTV — which have CPMs that are often 10X higher than display ads. As recent trends have shown, generating fake CTV ads is a favorite activity of these bots. Advanced Bot Manager can be deployed in minutes and does not require code changes, software development kit integrations, or JavaScript injections that add complexity or impact user experience. The service is infrastructure and network-agnostic, allowing customers to integrate it with their cloud, on-premises or hybrid cloud infrastructure.

Redirect traffic, forced navigation, or “no-click” traffic means users are forced to go to another page without their taking any action. This generates more pageviews and impressions, and redirects users to malicious pages too, when malware based bots need to be replenished. Also, why do big mainstream publishers’ sites have far less bot activity? Right, bots can’t make money by causing ads to load on good publishers’ sites, that don’t pay for traffic. Small sites in programmatic exchanges, which have low to no human visitors, buy traffic so they can make more ad revenue. When they “buy traffic” that traffic is not from a bunch of humans who have nothing to do.
